A Gamelan (meaning ‘hammered’) is a traditional Indonesian percussion ensemble consisting primarily of tuned giant gongs and metallophones, often used to accompany dance and shadow puppet theatre. The children have an opportunity to explore the exotic nature of the music and culture, experiencing a sound world not heard in the West with these strunning, little-seen authentic instruments. Andy has a full gamelan orchestra plus a mini gamelan, the latter more suited to the younger children. Groups are generally smaller for this workshop to allow greater exploration and detail. Due to the size and nature of the instruments, they cannot be easily moved for lunch!
